Abstract

Waste has contributed to global warming issues globally. It has become one of the major environmental challenges faced by the world today. Waste to energy is advantageous in the utilisation of waste into renewable energy sources. However, the commercialization of renewable energy initiatives is costly compared to the traditional fuel-based energy. There is still a barrier in financing the renewable energy projects which can be alternatives to fossil fuels. This chapter explores the South African funding for energy related projects and initiatives. There is The Green Fund, Commercial Banks, Development Finance Institutions, South African Government Departments, and other renewable energy institutions, and Private Equity companies which offer different funding for energy initiatives. Each funding institution has its own requirements and offer either a grant or a loan, or both.
