Abstract

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest malignancies, with increasing incidence and mortality worldwide. This chapter explores the epidemiology and trends of pancreatic cancer in Africa, comparing its rates with global statistics and identifying unique risk factors such as genetics, environment, diet, and multifactorial factors. It examines diagnostic and screening challenges, highlighting barriers to early detection and the limited availability of advanced diagnostic tools as well as prevention. Treatment accessibility, affordability, and the role of traditional medicine are analyzed, along with the current state of healthcare infrastructure and policies affecting cancer care. Research efforts and data collection on pancreatic cancer in Africa are reviewed, pointing out key initiatives and gaps. Through case studies and regional insights, the chapter underscores disparities and successes across the continent. the chapter concludes with recommendations for improving early detection, treatment access, healthcare infrastructure, and research, aiming to guide stakeholders and policymakers in combating pancreatic cancer and improving patient outcomes in Africa.
