Abstract

© Medpharm. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disease of the brain, the most common cause of dementia in the geriatric population, and a major cause of death. Alzheimer's disease places a heavy burden on families, communities and society, in terms of care and costs. This is compounded by the fact that populations across the world are having a longer life expectancy. An overview of Alzheimer's as a disease state and its pharmacological and non-pharmacological management is provided in the paper. Caring for the person diagnosed with Alzheimer's may be taxing and thus caring for the carer is also described.
