Abstract
Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) is an extensively cultivated leafy vegetable documented for its nutritious, commercial, and therapeutic importance. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of its taxonomy, morphology, phytochemical composition, and beneficial properties. Bioactive compounds, including phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which contribute to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer potential, are highlighted as major contributions to this chapter, showcasing its importance. Traditional and modern uses of L. sativa are debated, along with its pharmacological significance and likely applications in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. The chapter also highlights emergent safety issues and research gaps, underlining the necessity for additional studies on bioavailability, clinical validation, and toxicological assessments of L. sativa.
